LA FRONTERA: ENCOUNTERS ALONG THE BORDER @MAD MUSEUM

Son Necesarias las Fronteras (2013) by Iacov Azubel (Argentina)

Serving as a catalyst of socio-political conversation, the subject of the MAD's current jewelry exhibit fossilizes the hope and devastation that America's southern frontier represents. La Frontera: Encounters along the Border presents a view into the "complex physical, economic, cultural, social and emotional landscape of human interaction" [MAD Press Release] experienced at the most frequently crossed border in the world. Forty Eight artisans across the globe interpret the inspirations and aspirations of Mexicans, Central Americans and American citizens who interact with the Border between the U.S. and Mexico. Originating in 2013 at the Museo Franz in Mexico City, the exhibit has been updated for its debut at the MAD, in light of Trump's public stance on (anti-)immigration and interest in constructing a new border wall"La Frontera testifies to the power of intimate personal objects within the epic human and natural dramas that unfold daily along the US-Mexico border," according to MAD Assistant Curator Barbara Paris Gifford; "At a time when the personal has become lost in the politics, this exhibition reminds us of our shared humanity, and points to the absurdity of constructing artificial divisions." Jewelry highlights include a Mourning Brooch by Julia Turner that personifies the dangers of crossing by foot and Kevin Hughes' untitled necklace made from a jug handle, representing the plastic water jugs left by aid workers close to the border. La Frontera: Encounters Along the Border runs through September 23rd.
